A MURDER investigation is underway after the body of a man was
reportedly found cut in half, stuffed in a rubbish bag and dumped in the
street.
Bangladeshi Taher Antaz was found next to a bin near the Naim Health Centre yesterday morning.
It is still unclear what happened to the 31-year-old construction worker, who was reportedly brutally beaten up before being killed, said sources.
A passer-by called police after he noticed a foul smell coming from the bin in Naim, which was cordoned off for almost two hours as shopkeepers in the area were questioned.
The Interior Ministry confirmed the incident and said initial investigations indicated "suspicious circumstances".
"The man was cut in half and his body was found in a rubbish bag which was kept next to a rubbish bin," said the sources.
"Forensic experts and a medical examiner were sent to the site to gather evidence, including the cause of death, which is thought to be murder.
"They received a call from an anonymous caller informing them about the bag.
"Initial investigations revealed the worker died after being beaten severely."
They added that Mr Antaz's body has been transferred to the Salmaniya Medical Complex's morgue.
A wall of silence met the GDN in the area as people were still coming to terms with what happened outside their homes and places of work.
Some said they were shocked and afraid after police officers swarmed the area when news of the murder broke out.
"We went to collect our tools before going to work when we saw policemen in the area," said an Indian man, who works in a hardware store.
"They questioned some of my colleagues and left. We asked them what happened but they didn't tell us.
"We later got to know about the body of an Asian man found in a bag next to the bin.
"This is really scary. Can people go to that extent to kill a human being? This can happen to anyone and it really worries me.
"It's this man today, it could be me or anyone else tomorrow. How can someone be so cruel?"
A restaurant worker, who was also questioned by police, said the neighbourhood was shaken by the incident.
"Police officers came to our shop and questioned us," said the Bangladeshi man.
"We didn't know anything about the incident, as it happened away from our shop."
Mr Antaz arrived in Bahrain three years ago and he was described as "quiet" and "hardworking" by his employer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
"We have been informed about his death by police and they called us to go and identify his body," said the Bahraini.
"Mr Antaz was a hard worker and the best employee we had hired. He was naturally a quiet person and whenever there was no work, he used to come and help us in the office.
